Bigger Is Better

Businesses are always looking for ways to stand out and make people take notice. While mail pieces are a popular source of marketing, how do you make sure your mail isn’t thrown out without ever being looked at?

There are a few things you can do to catch the eyes of your target market, and help ensure your readers are looking at your message. Read on for some helpful tips!

Business owners often contact me for design advice when they have a new promotion, a grand opening, or a special event. For instances like these, they want to know: What is the best way to get their message out? What can they do to stand out amid the pile of daily mail?

The Oversize Postcard

The answer: an oversize postcard. Think about it. Its size makes it stand out in the stack of mail, and because there are no envelopes to open or fancy panels to decipher, the message comes across loud and clear . . . and immediately. These pieces are also great multi-taskers: in addition to being a terrific mailer, you can hand them out at tradeshows, use them to stand out at networking events, or post them as mini flyers.

Business Basics

Once you’ve chosen to create an oversized postcard for your promotion, you need to select the exact measurements and consider the delivery costs. While a standard postcard is 4 x 6 inches, larger options include 5.5 x 8.5 inches up to 6.125 x 11.5 inches. Since larger mailing pieces can require additional postage, and since the weight of the paper the postcard is printed on can impact mailing expenses, check with your local post office or mailing service provider to determine exact costs at the project onset.

Design Tips

The larger space on an oversized postcard invites high-impact designs. You can optimize white space so your piece stands out and really draws attention. To achieve this, you should keep your text to a minimum. Instead of cluttering your marketing message with a bunch of words, keep it simple and provide a strong “call to action”-a request to visit your website, scan a QR code, bring a coupon to your event, or otherwise act on the offer. Keep your colors to a minimum (no more than four) so your look is clean, clear, and professional.

If you follow this advice, you can have a great piece that attracts attention and elicits a quick response from customers.
