Make Every Marketing Dollar Count

If you’re like most small businesses, you need to use every marketing dollar carefully . . . and effectively. What’s one of the best ways to boost your business? By making sure people can find you online. You achieve this by optimizing your website’s keywords so that more people can find your business on the internet. And this is something you can tackle yourself . . . for free.

As I mentioned above, every business - especially small ones - need to make every marketing dollar count.  But don’t disregard free marketing . . . these tips on how to boost your business online by using optimized keywords, and making sure people can find you in their searches, are powerful, and something you can do yourself.

Follow these three steps to learn how to choose the best keywords for your site.

Step 1: Brainstorming

Start by brainstorming what you think might be search terms for your business. Jot down a list of words and phrases that people might type into a search engine when looking for your products or services. You might ask colleagues or friends to brainstorm along with you. Remember to think about the words and phrases your customers use when talking about your offerings (which may not be the same words you use when describing your business).

Step 2: See What Google Suggests

Go to the Google search engine, as shown in the image below, and type your words and phrases into the search bar. As you start to type, Google will automatically suggest additional search terms.

These suggestions are based on what real people are actually typing when they are searching for businesses online. Note these suggestions carefully: they are what your target audience is looking for when they are looking for you. Once you get a feel for the more general search terms people are using, you can explore more specifics-such as narrowing to your geographic area or a niche offering you want to maximize.

Step 3: Learn from the Competition

Once you click on the search button for a specific search term, you will see the results of companies like yours in the area. Note that the top line in each search result lists keywords from those specific websites. Looking at what other businesses have used as keywords will give you a good idea about which keywords are most popular (and likely most effective) in your market.

You can also look at the bottom of the page for other suggested search terms. On Google, this list is labeled “Searches related to . . .” while Yahoo lists these under “Also Try.”

This research should provide you with a solid list of keywords to optimize your site-to make you more effective at getting found online. Remember, also, that each page of your website should have unique keywords based on the content of that specific page, and that keywords should be used both in the main text of the web page as well as in title tag and meta tags.

Keep in mind also that keywords and phrases can change over time, so make sure to monitor your site regularly, compare your ranking with that of your competitors, and take steps to make sure you are on page one of the search results for your industry.
